This summer we flew from Washington to Monterey, California, rented a motorhome, and ventured out on a 7-day road trip to southern California and back to Monterey.

After picking up the RV, we bought a week’s supply of eggs from an egg vending machine after a delightful little chicken show.

We spent our first night in the RV at an orange groove in Bakersfield, CA.

The next day we landed at Joshua Tree National Park. The kids discovered massive boulders, giant lizards, and cactus spines. Ouch!

After Joshua Tree we visited the Salton Sea. The photos are beautiful but hardly tell the full story. The pristine white sand is composed entirely of crunchy, broken fish bones. The glistening blue water is saturated with salt, pollution, and surrounded by decomposing fish. Flies were overly abundant. And, yes, it was very stinky.

We quickly bid the sea adieu and searched for our next destination. Where the Salton Sea was a treat for the nose, Salvation Mountain was a treat for the eyes. The kids enjoyed climbing the multicolored manmade mountain and exploring the little caves underneath.

Finally, we journeyed to San Diego, and then headed back to Monterey along the Pacific Coast, stopping to enjoy San Onofre Beach, Point Mugu Beach, and Del Monte Beach.
